Do you remember your preschool photos? Perhaps one has survived in the family album — with a collar a bit too big, a serious expression, or a hairstyle that makes you smile today. Such photographs have extraordinary value. They not only remind us how we looked, but also take us back to a world that changed long ago.

Childhood is made of small stages. The first days at preschool, playing with friends, school friendships and the festive end of the year. Well-made preschool and school photos help keep these moments long after children have outgrown their favourite outfits and school backpacks.

Preschool photography with an idea

A preschool session doesn’t have to mean a row of identical portraits taken against a backdrop that says little about the children. It can be a small adventure in which sets, costumes and decorations create a world that sparks the imagination.

Santa’s winter workshop, a spring garden, a colourful costume ball or a subtle arrangement inspired by favourite children’s stories — there are many possibilities. What matters most is that the idea suits the children’s age, the character of the school and the occasion.

As a photographer, I pay attention not only to the prepared set, but also to how children feel in it. Some step into their role at once and enthusiastically explore the props. Others need a moment to get used to the camera. In both cases it’s worth leaving room for natural reactions.

Thanks to this, preschool photography can be colourful and imaginative while still preserving the individuality of every child.

School photos that show personality

The start of school and its end are special moments in a child’s life. A first-grader’s portrait recalls the courage with which they began a new stage. A graduate’s photo, in turn, captures the moment when childhood meets the next step into adulthood.

In school photography, the balance between aesthetics and authenticity matters to me. A portrait should be carefully made, but it can’t take away a child’s freedom. A natural smile, a characteristic gesture or a glance often says more than the most elaborate pose.

Every child has a story. It’s worth making sure a photograph remains, one that will be a pleasure to return to.

Besides individual portraits, it’s worth thinking about class photos. They’re a keepsake not only for parents but for the whole group — a record of friendships, shared experiences and everyday life that takes on special meaning over the years.

How to prepare children for a photo session?

A good session begins before the photographer even appears. It’s worth telling children beforehand what the meeting will look like, but without building pressure that they absolutely must smile for the camera.

For themed sessions, simple rules work well: comfortable outfits, a well-prepared place and time that lets children get used to the situation. If we plan costumes or extra props, make sure they don’t restrict movement or distract from the little models.

Cooperation with teachers is also very important. They know the group, they know which children need more time, and they help organise the shoot so that it’s as calm as possible for everyone.

A professional preschool photographer should be able to work with children patiently, respecting their boundaries and without unnecessary haste.

A keepsake that stays for years

Preschool and school photos often end up in family albums, on shelves and in frames in children’s rooms. Years later they come back during family gatherings, conversations about old friendships and looking through photographs together.

That’s why it’s worth making them more than a mandatory item on the school calendar. A thoughtful concept, careful execution and a friendly atmosphere let you create a keepsake that children will really want to keep.
